«Living 3D markers» are a new interactive 3D system based on the augmented reality technology.
The «living 3D markers» augmented reality technology is EligoVision’s proprietary solution that is protected by the certificate on the state registration of a computer program.
What is a «living 3D marker»
«Living 3D marker» is an image placed on any surface: paper, plastic etc. In order to view a virtual 3D object with animation or video on your screen, display or monitor you need to bring a marker to the camera.
The image encoded in the marker becomes three-dimensional: cars start going down virtual roads, satellites move in their orbits, balls roll in labyrinths, and games’ characters «come alive», move and greet players.
You can rotate, tilt and move markers in any direction in real space — all onscreen 3D models will accurately repeat all markers’ movements in front of the camera.
«Living 3D marker» can contain any content: from a rather simple item (e.g a static model of a vehicle or a building), to a complex presentation with animation and interconnected virtual objects, such as aircraft landing management or flower growing, accompanied by additional text and sound information.

What does an installation on «living 3D markers» consist of?
Final «living 3D markers» solution consists of two main components:
multimedia part: 3D application and a set of markers;
interactive and display systems.
1. The multimedia part is an application on a CD. Apart from the basic version we create a special lite edition of the application, which can be placed online. Users can download it from a website and run it on any PC.
The multimedia part also includes a set of printed «living 3D markers» necessary for application demonstration and operation at a stand.
2. The interactive system for working with the «living 3D markers» augmented reality system consists of a special camera and a graphics workstation (computer). It can be connected to any display system including 2D and 3D displays, plasma panels, screens, monitors and video walls of different sizes.
The camera that tracks markers in space is usually mounted above the display system.

All our interactive 3D solutions work on any type of 2D and 3D surfaces. This also applies to the «living 3D markers» augmented reality technology.
What is unique in the projects based on the «living 3D markers» technology is the ability to adjust the application to match any stereoscopic 3D system: from glasses-free 3D displays and stereoscopic glasses-based 3D displays to screen stereo systems of any form and size.

Recognition algorithm: marker technology
This technology was developed and officially protected in early 2010.
Marker-based «living 3D markers» look like a picture inside a special graphic frame.
EligoVision marker frame is a thin contour consisting of four lines and control points at the square corners. Control points let the camera and the software correctly identify the marker’s corners and accurately transfer its position and orientation from the real space into the virtual one.
Our «know-how» here is a special algorithm incorporated into the marker recognition technology.
The system identifies the three-dimensional position of the real marker using its picture taken with a camera. Recognition goes through several phases.
At first the camera captures a short video. Then the application recognizes spots on every frame in order to identify the specified pattern of a marker frame. Since the video is transmitted in 2D, the marker frame retrieved from the still image is identified as a 2D contour. Once the camera «finds» a frame in the surrounding space, it must determine what is shown inside of it. Once this phase is completed, the system creates a virtual 3D model in a two-dimensional coordinate system of the camera’s image. Finally the system links the model and the marker.
After that the virtual 3D model will precisely follow the marker’s movements no matter how you turn or move it in real space.

Recognition algorithm: markerless technology
This technology was developed in the middle of 2011.
It allows to use any graphic image (not just a picture inside a graphic frame) as a «living 3D marker».
Our markerless technology doesn’t employ a square frame with control points to find a «living 3D marker». EligoVision software uses a combination of several dozens of «special points» — contrasting spots on the selected image. Our «know-how» here is a special algorithm incorporated into the graphic image recognition technology.

All applications based on the «living 3D markers» technology can be web-extended and placed on a web-page.
We have two convenient options for you.
Offline: no or slow Internet connection.
Simply download the application from our web page and save it to you own PC (usually it is an archive containing an .exe file that launches the application on «living 3D markers»). If your computer is equipped with an integrated or external webcam, it connects automatically.
Once the working monitor starts showing camera video capture, the user brings a «living 3D marker» to the camera and starts viewing the application.

It needs to be downloaded and installed on you PC only once. After that users can view applications on markers online like a YouTube video.

Creating an application on «living 3D markers»
Step 1. Determining work specification and outlining a scenario for each 3D application. Writing a full scenario for each marker in the application.
Step 2. We develop 3D models for «living 3D markers» of the selected application, create animation, program physics and sound, and then convert the final model into our interactive EV environment.
Step 3. We develop a design layout for every application marker. We can also create layouts for other printing materials (flyers, albums, calendars, cards, t-shirts, etc.) that can contain markers.
Step 4. Finally all resulting models are placed onto markers created for the application. The outcome is a multimedia application, which can be installed on a PC hard drive and/or downloaded from a website (lite edition). It is compatible with Windows and/or Linux operating systems.
