Case studies — Augmented reality (AR)

This new project based on the «living 3D markers» augmented reality system by EligoVision was created exclusively for the Autodesk Forum that took place in Moscow, September 22-23, 2010.

The project was designed as a stationary installation using the stereoscopic JVC 3D display, and also as a web installation. It is also available for free viewing on our website:

We can develop a «living 3D marker» for any 3D model created with Autodesk software.

EligoVision also presented our own innovative solution — a virtual world management device called 3D Pointer.

Our CEO Sergei Matveyev and Marketing Director Valeriya Kholodkova gave a joint lecture at the Forum’s Conference:

3D content

The project software includes seven interactive «living 3D markers» placed into our virtual software environment.

The interactive area of the augmented reality system used at the Autodesk Forum was a table with sets of flyers that were printed on heavyweight paper and contained marker images.

EligoVision uses its own registered software to recognize augmented reality markers.

The project was conceived and executed to illustrate how 3D models, created with Autodesk software packages, integrate into our interactive 3D visualization environment — EV Environment. Currently, the following Autodesk software packages are supported for integration:

  • AutoCAD;
  • AutoCAD Mechanical;
  • AutoCAD Plant 3D;
  • Autodesk 3ds Max;
  • Autodesk 3ds Max Design;
  • Autodesk Inventor;
  • Autodesk Civil 3D;
  • Autodesk Maya;
  • Autodesk Revit Architecture.

Altogether we created seven «living 3D markers» for the Forum. See detailed description of every model below.

Nam Kong-1 Hydropower Project

The 3D model of the Nam Kong-1 Hydropower Project in Laos was presented to us in AutoCAD, Autodesk Civil 3D and Autodesk Inventor.

The author of the model is Dmitry Kholodkov, a leading engineer in SPKTB Mosgidrostal.

It is a massive gravity concrete dam build out of roller-compacted concrete.

This 3D model of the hydropower dam includes real topography and relief data, additional visual effects for simulating water flow, as well as imitation of waves and light refraction.


Animated six-legged robot

The six-legged robot is one of the robotic construction models created by LLC Robotics Laboratory.

We received this model in Autodesk Inventor. With some additional modification this robot can be used:

  • at EMERCOM for passing through cross-country locations;
  • for soil research both on the Earth and on other assimilated planets;
  • for military purposes (installation of specialized equipment is required).

The model of the six-legged robot was animated in Autodesk 3ds Max Design and then textured.

Transfer pump station

This model represents a typical transfer pump station (TPS). The project was completed with the help of some Autodesk software products:

  • production engineering — Autodesk AutoCAD Plant 3D;
  • heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, plumbing and sewage — Autodesk AutoCAD MEP;
  • architectural design — Autodesk AutoCAD Architecture;
  • metal work, RC construction — Autodesk AutoCAD Structural Detailing.

The project was executed by specialists from NEOLANT Project, a project company that uses state-of-art information technologies in its work.

When preparing the TPS model for programming on our «living 3D marker» we used render-to-texture feature, and added the developer’s logo.

Ethnographic centre of indigenous people of Kamchatka

A 3D model of the Ethnographic centre of indigenous people of Kamchatka was presented to us in Autodesk Revit Architecture.

It was created by architect-engineer Leonid Skryabin. In 2010 he graduated from the Novosibirsk State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (Sibstrin) with a degree in Building Design.

Ethnographic centre of indigenous people of Kamchatka is Skryabin’s graduation work. This project was created for education purposes and was intended to be built in a real location in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. In 2010 the project was awarded Second Place at the Regional competition of graduation projects, and received a Special Diploma at the final round of the All-Russian competition of graduation projects in the Building Design category.

The centre model was textured in Autodesk 3ds Max.

Architectural designs based on Ivan Leonidov’s drawings

The main project of Ivan Leonidov, which the architect worked on until his last days, was the magnificent «City of the Sun». Leonidov came up with this concept before the beginning of World War II. It combined two main projects of his life – the Lenin Institute and the Narkomtyazhprom Building. The «City of the Sun» was never brought to life, but its drafts represent all of Leonidov’s innovative ideas and serve as a source of inspiration for many great architects.

All three models were created by EligoVision’s designers:

  • the Lenin Institute of Librarianship in Moscow;
  • the Columbus monument in Santo Domingo;
  • the Narkomtyazhprom Building in Moscow.

The architectural models were created in Autodesk 3ds Max, Autodesk 3ds Max Design and Autodesk Maya. After that we added some animation and texture.

Program demonstration

You can test the new project on your own PC (please ensure a webcam is connected to your computer). We created two separate pages for the Autodesk Forum projects.

Each page contains an application instruction and a short description of models used in the demo.


 The project hardware is an interactive visual 3D solution, which includes:

  • interactive «living 3D markers» system: a camera, a set of markers, a graphics workstation equipped with a professional video card such as NVIDIA Quadro FX 5800;
  • a number of «living 3D markers» sets each including 7 colored flyers;
  • JVC 3D display (46’) based on glasses with circular polarization.
